This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively in the line of duty as a fisheries officer.

The unit applies to individuals who work in a fisheries compliance monitoring role and who are required to use appropriate communication and conflict resolution skills when dealing with individuals and team members in a one-to-one situation or in meetings.

No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. Check with the relevant state or territory regulator for the legislative requirements that may apply to this unit.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Brief supervisors and other team members on the meeting's purpose and proposed items to be raised 
Research and obtain documents to be used for the meeting 
Prepare own contributions relevant to the purpose of the meeting and supportive of the organisation's goals and objectives 
State and substantiate own position clearly and effectively 
Maintain control and objectivity at all times in conflict situations 
De-escalate situational conflict according to agency code of ethics and policies and procedures 
Separate persons in conflict, where appropriate, and negotiate or impose relevant solutions 
Access and use external agencies where required
